You would think that the sight of my older relative’s teeth sitting in a cup and his quirky dental party tricks with the grandkids, would have been enough incentive to start taking care of my pearly whites in a big hurry - but strangely enough, it wasn’t until the recent trip to the dentist that I was snapped into gear….

But let me digress for just a moment. Let’s just say dental hygiene was never the biggest priority in my household. Thank goodness I have never been a smoker and have already dealt with my sugar cravings so that was two less things to worry about! And while my teeth never resembled those gruesome diseased pictures you see on the walls of the dentist’s office, I knew I had to get my act together and get serious about taking care of my teeth if I truly wanted to be healthy.

So if health has always been top of the priority list – and is up there with happiness - why is it that the teeth didn’t get much attention along the way? After a bit of introspection, the answers came to me. 

Goddess teeth required a completely new self image, an extreme makeover of the mind. You see, growing up I always got the feeling that vanity was seen as selfish and standing for too long in front of a mirror a crime to humanity - a bit too princessy, a complete waste of time that couldn’t be justified and better spent somewhere else actually contributing to society.

While there is certainly some truth to this, I eventually came to the conclusion that there has to be a certain level of self care and it was ok to be a goddess, it wasn’t just about looking good – this was just as much a part of my health as eating well and I deserved to be taken care of properly! I knew that it was up to me to do something about it.

On a recent visit to the dentist, I admitted that I am far better at childbirth than I am at going to the dentist, much to the doctor's amusement. 

As I sat back in the chair with bright lights in my face, metal objects jabbed in my mouth and masked authority poking around in such a sensitive area, asking me questions that I couldn’t answer without sounding like Darth Vedar, I quickly remembered why I couldn’t stand going to the dentist. The moment I stepped out of that office, I made a serious commitment to myself to get my dental practises in order- so I wouldn’t have to go in there for more “work’ again.

And true to my word I stuck to my plan......Luckily I had just the right tools to do the job.
